Power Pop: The Next Generation

Thursday Oct 31, 2024

Thursday Oct 31, 2024

Power pop is experiencing a new wave of younger artists, and the music is great! We've assembled a round table of music geeks to listen to a dozen of today's best newer power pop artists. On the panel is Steve Coulter (Tsar) aka author SW Lauden, The Well Wishers' Jeff Shelton, and Tik Tok'r Allen Lulu. Get your pen and paper ready to write down these great recommendations as we nerd out to some excellent tunes!

Be sure to check out our previous round table episode: Power Pop in the 90's!

Find Pop Fuss on Instagram @PopFussPod, also on Twitter, Tik Tok and Facebook. Email: PopFuss@gmail.com

S.W. Lauden is the editor of Remember The Lightning (Substack) and the semi-annual Remember The Lightning Guitar Pop Journals (print/e-book). His power pop-themed crime fiction novellas include That'll Be The Day:A Power Pop Heist and Good Girls Don't. S.W. Lauden is the pen name of Steve Coulter, drummer for various LA-based pop rock bands including Ridel High, Tsar, and the Brothers Steve. Follow him on Instagram @SWLauden
Jeff Shelton, former band leader of the Spinning Jennies, and long time host of the radio program, "The Power Pop Show," is the man behind The Well Wishers. Bandcamp is his primary home base:  https://thewellwishers.bandcamp.com/. Be sure to check out his latest record, "Just So You Know." It's full of rockin', infectious ear candy!
Allen Lulu goes by the handle @areallulu on TikTok where he features unstreamable & nearly forgotten Power Pop albums from days gone by as well as new artists. He is the instigator & one of the admins of The Listening Post: The 80s on Facebook, a group dedicated to hunting down, listening to, rating and reviewing every rock album from that decade, where there are thousands of albums in and still, somehow only in 1983. (If that interests you, ask to be included and I will let you in) In his past life he was the frontman for the Los Angeles rock band, Throttle Back Sparky, whose 2005 album will see a remastered re-release on vinyl in 2025.

Chime School

Monday Oct 28, 2024

Monday Oct 28, 2024

Chime School joins us this episode to discuss their great new LP, "The Boy Who Ran The Paisley Hotel." As the creative force behind the group, Andy Pastalaniec wrote and performed the new record by himself, and the group is fleshed out on the road with a top notch band. Chime School is getting a ton of buzz from multiple outlets as their ringing Rickenbacker's have given us sunny jangle pop juxtaposed at times by melancholy lyrics.

It's a poppy punky helluva good time, and if you like Letters to Cleo, That Dog or The Breeders, you're in for a treat! Author Dean Brownrout joins Pop Fuss to discuss his tragicomic new book, "No Big Deal: Chasing the indie music dream in the last days of the record business." As the founder of power pop label "Big Deal" in the 90's, Dean recounts his rock and roll journey by booking bands at age 15, having brunch with Metallica while booking them for one of the most important shows of their young career, cold calling Todd Rundgren, signing the Goo Goo Dolls, and more! It's a crazy story that all music fans will enjoy. And of course, power pop fans fondly recall his label for bringing us seminal bands of the genre, when the music got hot in the 90's. And Dean has graciously offered to send a book to a lucky listener!

This episode available on all podcast sites - search Pop Fuss!

You can find Dean on Instagram @DeanBrownrout, and order his book at NoBigDeal.info, Amazon or wherever you purchase your favorites.

**BOOK GIVEAWAY** Simply send an email to PopFuss@gmail.com by 11/1/24 telling your favorite memories of the Big Deal label, or bands that you loved. I'll randomly choose a winner and Dean will mail a book to your door! (continental US only).

Ken Stringfellow

Monday Oct 14, 2024

Monday Oct 14, 2024

Ken Stringfellow (The Posies, REM, Big Star, etc.) joins Pop Fuss to discuss his first solo album in 12 years, "Circuit Breaker." We play several tracks and Ken comments about the inspiration behind the songwriting, after he has undergone a few years of therapy and introspection. Additionally, Ken talks about several guest appearances on the record, including Suzi Quatro, Lydia Lunch, and Bruce and Pete Thomas (Elvis Costello & The Attractions). Hear Ken answer the questions: Did Alex Chilton almost join The Orange Humble Band? Was there a "missing" Posies album recorded between Dear 23 and Frosting on the Beater? And will we ever hear the most recently completed (and unreleased) Posies album?

Be sure to follow Ken on Instagram @KenStringfellow for all news about the record, videos, and tour plans. Visit his Bandcamp page to purchase "Circuit Breaker" - it's perhaps his best album!

Bitters

Thursday Sep 26, 2024

Thursday Sep 26, 2024

Bitters joins Pop Fuss to discuss her new EP "Can't Think Straight." Raised in the UK as a classically trained vocalist, and signed to her first publishing deal at just 16, Claudia first made waves in LA as a songwriter. The urge to perform her own songs later resulted in her first EP, released in 2022. Today, Bitters is one of the most promising alt pop acts around, releasing uber catchy pop/rock - think Shirley Manson or Alanis Morrisette but with more pop hooks! I've had her music on repeat for months now - ear worms galore!
